The Chicago Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators began its 2010-2011 operational year on July 1. I hope you’re confident that the chapter is in good hands.
I’m confident—not simply because I know the dedication, skill and experience of the chapter’s elected leaders and volunteers. I’m confident because I know that the strength of this chapter will continue to be based in the participation, support and energy of its total membership.
Sure, the 20 or so people serving this year on the IABC/Chicago Board of Directors will lead the chapter’s strategic planning and tactical efforts. But this is no year for you to miss the fun and satisfaction of getting the most out of your membership.
The board’s annual strategic planning session is set for July 17, but I’m giving you a preview of my suggested focus for this year. I believe that we need to be more intentional about recruiting, retaining and involving members.
This metropolitan area has too many student and professional communicators who don’t understand the value that IABC/Chicago can offer them.
This chapter has too many members whose skills and experience could go untapped, to the detriment of all.
This chapter president has too much faith in the future of IABC/Chicago to watch us squander an opportunity to offer something unique and special to each other and to the community in which we live and work.
That “something unique and special” is membership in IABC/Chicago—an association of professional communicators who help shape the current and future state of the profession.
Be ready for the call to participate this year, as your interest, time and energy allow. Be ready to allow yourself to share the work and rewards that will come. Be ready to Be Heard™, to be seen and to be reengaged.
Much more to come.
