IABC Headquarters announced yesterday evening that Executive Director Chris Sorek has resigned to return to the corporate sector. This message has sent shockwaves through the organization, ignited several discussions on social networks, and brought unnecessary rumor and innuendo. As chapter president, I feel it is important that we relay the factual information at the local level.
First, IABC/Chicago remains strong in its commitment to improving the effectiveness of internal and external communication professionals in the Chicagoland area. Our current schedule of meetings and events remains uninterrupted and we do not foresee any changes in day-to-day operations at this time.
Second, IABC’s original plan was to post Sorek’s departure release to the iabc.com website as soon as all members had been notified via email. Due to technical issues with the member database, along with website issues, a “perfect storm of tech problems” was created which kept staff from relaying this important announcement properly. They have since corrected these issues, and posted the release to the website.
Third, World Conference will continue as planned and registration numbers continue to climb. The international executive board will begin looking for an interim director following the conference, until the position is filled on a more permanent basis.
IABC has experienced significant policy changes and has seen a massive restructure at its San Francisco headquarters. These changes are a result of a multi-year strategic plan that IABC initiated over a year ago. The international leadership stated that the strategic plan remains on track. International Chair Kirby Meyers stated yesterday, “We are dedicated to delivering exceptional service to our members and growing the Association. We have an ambitious agenda and will continue to implement innovative products and services that raise the bar within the communication profession worldwide.”
The board of directors and I are committed to relaying information as it is made available to us. We will post items here, as well as on our LinkedIn Group as needed.
If anyone happens to receive media inquiries, Kirby Meyers has asked that all inquiries be sent to its communication director, Aaron Heinrich, at aheinrich@iabc.com.

Sincerely,
Justin Brunner
2012-13 President, IABC/Chicago
